Commercial tires are one of a fleet’s biggest expenses. Even though commercial tires are expected to last from 100,000 to 150,000 miles, most trucks can easily put that many miles on their tires in just one year. If you’re wondering how much big rig tire cost, you can easily spend from $250 to $600 on each tire, with premium tires costing even more, up to $1,200 or more. Don’t let sticker shock keep you from investing in new tires when it’s time for a replacement. 

Why big rig tire Cost Differently

Just as car tires are rated for different elements, speeds, and loads, so are semi truck tires. The below factors can affect the price of the tire: 

• Truck size

  – The bigger the tire, the more expensive it will be. Tires that can handle heavier loads are going to cost more, too. 

• Type of tire – Steer tires tend to be more expensive than drive or tire wheels, because the steer tires are more important to the performance of the truck. Softer tires offer a more comfortable ride, but they will wear out quicker than a harder tire. 

• Warranty – The warranty of the tire can impact the big rig tire cost as well. Tires with a longer warranty will cost more but they may be more cost-effective over the life of the tire. Ideally, you want a four to seven year warranty.  

When buying tires, look on the sidewall for the DOT code to know that you’re getting a US product. You may also want to select a recognized brand when buying new commercial tires. 

Keep Your Tires Running Longer 

Tires with the same tread are recommended for commercial trucks but replacing 18 or more tires at one time can be expensive. Maintain your tires well to prevent blowouts and to keep your drivers safe. Here are our recommendations: 

• Keep Your Commercial Fleet Vehicles’ Tires Properly Inflated 

We cannot stress proper inflation of tires for a safe ride. Underinflated and overinflated tires wear more quickly and blowout more often. Use a tire pressure gauge to ensure proper inflation. Avoid relying on kicking the tire or judging it by eye. 

• Watch the Wear of the Tread 

Inspect tires at least once a month to watch how the tread is wearing. Check the inner and outer parts of the tire. If you’re seeing uneven wear, you may need to have the tires aligned or perform other truck maintenance. Catching it early can reduce problems on the road, like blowouts. 

• Replace Tires That Are Worn 

Worn out tires are an accident waiting to happen. Don’t try to get more miles out of tires to save money. Older tires with low tread are a hazard to everyone on the road. Replacing them sooner than later is better for your business and gives you peace of mind. 

• Rotate Tires Regularly 

Stick to a tire rotation schedule to make your tires last longer. Rotating the tires can ensure that the tread wears more evenly, which extends their life.
